First of all before you watch this movie, just ask yourself whether you are or not into a robotic action (science fiction) type of movie. As for me, yes I do like this kind of movie since I think I never grown up as a boy. Initially, I didn’t plan to watch the movie based on what I saw in the trailer (yes, I’m still thinking that the trailer sucks). However, a lot of friends of mine especially in my twitter timeline stated that the movie is very awesome. Hence I was interested to try.
Ok, some said that we couldn’t compare Pacific Rim with the like of The Transformers, Patlabor or even Ultraman. With no purpose to equate people’s masterpieces with one another, I would say that it is more like The Avengers.
I hope I’m not making a spoiler by saying this but the main idea of Pacific Rim is that there are some (let just say) aliens in form of Kaiju (怪獣) or Strange Creature/Monster which are coming from ‘another dimension’ through a ‘tunnel/portal’ try to occupy the earth. Although maybe it is not directly the main ide of The Avengers but at least, the final action of such movie is that some aliens are coming to the earth through a ‘tunnel/portal’ and then ravaging New York City.
Of course the heroes of Pacific Rim to combat Kaiju are not a Super Heroes or Mutants but some giant robots created by humanity and also controlled (or maybe driven to be exact) by 2 (two) pilots whose minds are joined by a neural bridge. The giant robots called Jaeger.
Here is the storyline:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
The plot is fast enough for an action movie. There are still some dramas inserted but not much, though. The action is epic. When I said epic, it was related to how much the town (combat location) damaged. Which I, personally, do not like.
Oh and I also want to comment on the combat itself. Jaeger is a massive robot installed with of course missiles or even sword and guess what, Kaiju also have some attacking abilities such as spliting acid substances or even electromagnetic shock wave! Some of them can fly, too. And oh yes, they also can think.
I thought that Kaiju is just a sea monster (like Godzila?) but actually Kaiju is more than that (with such abilities). Also, the combat always starts with some bitch slaps festival where a massive robot punches and a giant monster punches back. Dear God, why did not they just use some missiles or acid substances split at the first place?! I know, I know, it’s a science fiction action robotic movie. But still, why?!
Also about the epic combat, can you just say Jaeger has just won it when the town (combat location) is massively ruined?! Ah, however, do not sleep over it. It is a nice and light summer movie. The CGI is also very awesome although I am still amazed more with The Transformers’ (there I said again).
